11'1" x 16'4" Persian Najafabad Rug | Red Field | Cream Star Medallion | Allover Shah Abbas Floral | Hand-Knotted Wool

Please note: any lines, waves, or shadows visible in the photographs are simply temporary creases from being folded and stored on pallets. They ease out once the rug is laid flat, and every piece is professionally ironed before it ships. Any gentle variation in the depth of the red field is natural abrash, a hallmark of hand-dyed wool that is documented in the listing video.

This oversized 11 by 16 foot Persian Najafabad is a grand, formal piece in the classic style of the Isfahan region. A luminous cream and navy star medallion anchors a warm red field that is filled corner to corner with finely drawn vine work, and a deep navy border frames the whole composition. At nearly sixteen and a half feet long, it is built to fill a great room, a large dining room, or a long formal living space with a single continuous design.

Design and Motifs

At the center sits a layered eight-point star medallion, drawn on a navy ground and filled with interlaced palmettes, leaves, and a small sapphire-blue rosette at its very core, with elegant pendants reaching toward each end. Radiating out from it, the red field carries the full Shah Abbas vocabulary that defines this regional style: large palmettes, multi-petaled rosettes, curling split leaves, and slender vine scrolls that connect every blossom into one continuous, beautifully balanced garden. Matching spandrels in cream anchor the four corners, and the navy main border carries a stately procession of palmettes and serrated leaves, fenced by ivory and sky-blue floral guard stripes that keep the busy field neatly contained.

Colors and Placement

The warm red field gives this Najafabad its rich, welcoming presence, while cream, ivory, navy, sky blue, soft green, and touches of gold light up the florals so the pattern reads crisp and lively across its full length. The pale medallion and corner spandrels create a clear sense of order in a very large layout, drawing the eye to the center while the allover field keeps the surface engaging from every angle. Gentle abrash in the red ground adds the quiet movement and depth that only naturally dyed wool can give. The red and cream palette pairs naturally with warm woods, traditional furnishings, and rich upholstery, and it brings instant warmth to a large, open room.

Origin and Construction

Najafabad sits just west of Isfahan in central Persia and shares that region's celebrated tradition of formal medallion layouts and finely detailed floral drawing. This piece is hand-knotted in 100% wool on a cotton foundation at roughly 200 to 220 knots per square inch, a density that lets the curved vines and small floral details stay sharp across a rug of this scale. Now about forty years old yet never used and in excellent condition, it has the crisp clarity of a much newer piece.
