13'5" x 19'2" Pre-Revolution Persian Tabriz Rug | 60 Raj, Wool & Silk | Palace Size Masterpiece

This is a masterpiece. A pre-revolution Persian Tabriz woven close to fifty years ago, 13'5" x 19'2", at a fine 60 Raj, roughly 500 knots per square inch, about 22 knots to the running inch. It is hand-knotted in wool and silk on a cotton foundation, and the finest touch is in the material itself: the flowers and the ivory ground are worked entirely in silk, so they catch the light and lift off the wool around them. Rugs from this period were made with materials and techniques that are extremely difficult to reproduce today, which is exactly why serious collectors seek them out. In a palace size this large, with this level of fineness and this condition, it is genuinely a one-of-one piece. Every rug we ship includes a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

At the heart of the rug sits a large, elaborately layered medallion, its lobed edges dissolving into fine floral tracery and reaching out through slender pendants toward each end. The same shapes are answered in the corner spandrels, so the whole composition is held together the way a great Tabriz always is, medallion, corners and field speaking to one another. Between them the ivory field is filled edge to edge with the Shah Abbasi vocabulary: palmettes, rosettes, curling vines and small blossoms drawn so finely they only read clearly because the knot count is so high. This is the kind of drawing that simply cannot be done at a coarser weave, precise, flowing and endlessly detailed. A deep navy main border carries a floral vine of palmettes and roses, framed by narrow guard stripes in gold and teal.

Color and Palette

The palette is soft, refined and unmistakably a master workshop's hand. The ground is a warm ivory that glows wherever the silk is worked into it, and against it the pattern is drawn in dusty rose and pink, soft blues, sage and olive green, gold and quiet teal. The medallion and corners deepen into browns and taupe that ground the whole design, while the navy border gives it a rich, dark frame. Because the flowers and the field lights are silk, the color shifts gently as you move around the rug, one moment matte and painterly, the next catching a low sheen. It is elegant rather than loud, the sort of coloring made to anchor a formal room for a lifetime.

Origin and Weave

Tabriz, in northwest Persia, has been the benchmark for precision in Persian weaving for centuries, and this rug is Tabriz at its best. Its design is a Shah Savarpour, one of the celebrated Tabriz patterns, drawn here with the control that only a very high knot count allows. Woven before the 1979 revolution at 60 Raj and roughly 500 knots per square inch, it belongs to a period whose wool, silk and workmanship are prized precisely because they are so hard to match now. The silk used for the flowers and the ivory ground is what gives it its glow, set into a durable wool pile on a cotton foundation. A size this large is genuinely rare for a Tabriz of this fineness, which places it among the most important pieces in our collection of oversize rugs, and squarely in collector and investment territory.
