This is an oversize oriental Shiraz rug, hand-knotted in India in the geometric tribal style of the Shiraz and Qashqai weavers of southwest Persia. Three large stepped diamond medallions run up the center of a soft ivory and grey field, framed by a warm tulip and rosette border. At nearly 14 by 18 feet, it is a true palace and great-room scale piece, and its muted, decorator-friendly palette keeps a rug this large feeling calm rather than heavy. It is brand new and never used.
Design and Motifs
The field is organized around three connected diamond medallions, each built from a stepped central motif surrounded by hooked tabs, eight-point stars, small rosettes, and serrated leaf forms in the classic Shiraz manner. Around the medallions the ivory ground is filled with scattered blossoms, geometric flowers, and tribal fillers, while the wide main border carries a procession of large rosettes and tulips between barber-pole guard stripes. The overall effect is busy and traditional but softened by the gentle coloring.
Colors and Placement
The palette is soft and neutral, built on ivory and grey with taupe, gold, olive, soft blue, muted rose, and sage green worked through the medallions and border. This restrained coloring makes it an easy rug to decorate around at scale, suited to large living rooms, great rooms, open-plan spaces, and formal dining rooms where a brighter rug would dominate. At roughly 14 by 18 feet it anchors a full seating group with room to spare and reads beautifully in both traditional and transitional interiors.
Origin and Construction
This rug was hand-knotted in India by skilled weavers working in the Shiraz tradition, using durable wool pile on a cotton foundation at roughly 140 to 160 knots per square inch. The weave is even and substantial, built to carry its all-over geometric pattern crisply across a palace-size span and to wear well for decades under heavy use.
