This palace-size 13x20 antique Persian Bijar rug is a monumental triclinium example, hand-knotted in the 1870s and built for the grandest interiors. A dense allover Herati field surrounds a rose and navy medallion, while the elongated triclinium layout frames the design in a series of ornate panels. Long celebrated as the iron rug of Persia, a Bijar of this scale pairs commanding presence with the kind of durability that lasts for generations.

Design and Motifs

The deep field is woven edge to edge with the classic Herati pattern, also called mahi or fish, a lattice of diamonds, rosettes, and curved serrated leaves. At the center sits a scalloped rose medallion outlined in olive green, holding a navy anchor cartouche flecked with blue and gold, with matching pendants reaching above and below. Rose corner spandrels and a run of floral borders complete the triclinium composition, giving the eye endless detail to explore across its great length.

Colors and Placement

Rich reds and deep indigo carry the field, lifted by the rose medallion, sky blue borders, and accents of olive green, ivory, and soft gold. Gentle abrash runs through the red ground, a natural signature of hand-spun wool and traditional dyes rather than any flaw. At roughly 13 by 20 feet this is a true estate piece, sized for a grand living room, ballroom, formal dining hall, or double-height great room where it can be seen in full.

Origin and Construction

Bijar rugs are woven in Persian Kurdistan on a tightly packed wool foundation beaten down with a metal comb, the technique that earns them the iron rug name and their legendary density, here a fine 320 to 340 knots per square inch. This is a genuine antique from the 1870s with an even, gently lower pile that reflects its age and is part of its authentic character. To see how this weaving tradition compares with neighboring villages, our guide on Bijar, Zanjan, Tekab, and Bukan is a helpful read.
