Persian Heriz | Made in Persia

This is a rare and important Persian Heriz in a true oversize palace format, 14'2" by 19'2", more than 270 square feet of hand-knotted wool. Two things set it apart immediately: the scale, which puts it in the small group of rugs large enough to anchor a ballroom, a grand great room, or a banquet-length dining table, and the drawing, which is far finer and more curvilinear than the bold geometric Heriz most people know. Woven at 200 to 220 knots per square inch, it belongs to the refined end of the Heriz district, the tradition that produced the celebrated Serapi and Bakhshayesh carpets, and it carries that elegance across an enormous field without a single awkward repeat. It is roughly 40 years old yet presents in brand new, never used condition.

Design and Motifs

The midnight navy field is commanded by a large ivory star medallion, an eight point form filled with a precise garden of rust, sage, and powder blue blossoms around a central rust rosette, framed by a scalloped camel and terracotta surround. From its top and bottom extend elaborate pendant cartouches that reach toward the ends of the field, while pairs of small ivory cloud cartouches float to either side. What makes the piece unusual is the rest of the navy ground: instead of the open field typical of village Heriz, it is filled with sweeping camel brown arabesque vinework, large serrated saz leaves, and palmettes that scroll the full length of the rug in mirror symmetry. Rust orange corner spandrels, themselves packed with French blue and olive flowering vines, anchor the four corners. The wide navy main border carries alternating rosettes and turtle palmettes between rust and salmon vine bands, and a delicate rose pink guard stripe with a barber pole rhythm separates the border layers, a refined touch you rarely see on a rug this size.

Colors and Placement

The palette is built on the classic Heriz contrast of midnight navy and rust orange, with the rust spandrels and border glowing warm against the deep cool blue of the field, and ivory, camel, sage, and powder blue keeping the vast surface lively from edge to edge. These are mellow, settled tones with the depth that only natural dyes and four decades of curing produce, so the rug reads rich rather than loud despite its size and color. A piece at this scale is meant to define a very large room: a formal living room with multiple seating groups all sitting on the rug, a grand dining room seating twelve to sixteen, a hotel or club lobby, a gallery, or the great room of an estate. The dense allover drawing and the dark navy ground are also intensely practical at this footprint, hiding traffic and wear in exactly the high-use spaces that call for a rug this large.

Origin and Construction

Heriz sits in the mountains of northwest Persia, east of Tabriz, and the district's name has been synonymous with grand, durable, room-defining carpets since the nineteenth century. The very finest Heriz weavings, the Serapi and Bakhshayesh pieces, soften the region's signature geometry into the kind of flowing, curvilinear medallion design seen here, and they are the most sought-after rugs the district produces. This carpet is hand-knotted at 200 to 220 knots per square inch with a full wool pile on a cotton foundation, a density that lets the weavers draw the arabesques and the medallion's interior flowers with real precision while keeping the rugged structure Heriz is prized for. Producing a rug this fine at nearly 14 by 19 feet represents an extraordinary amount of loom time, which is why oversize Heriz carpets of this quality so rarely come to market. It is in brand new, never used condition with full even pile, vivid color, and clean ivory fringe.
