Vibrant 7'11 x 11'5 Persian Kerman Rug, Navy Medallion on Magenta Field with Ivory Spandrels, Wool on Cotton

Please note: any lines, waves, or shadows visible in the photographs are simply temporary creases from folding and pallet storage. The rug relaxes flat once laid down, and every piece is professionally ironed before it ships.

Color first. A saturated magenta field carries a deep navy diamond medallion with ivory inner cartouche, framed by ivory spandrels at all four corners with emerald green disc fillers. The palette is unapologetic and the drawing is classical Kerman, with floral bouquets scattered around the medallion and a navy guard border in stylized lotus-and-leaf. About 40 years old and never used, this is the kind of statement rug that anchors a room without needing anything else in it. For more on the Persian weaving tradition that produced this piece, see our world of Persian rugs guide.

Design and Motifs

The composition is a textbook formal Persian medallion-and-spandrel layout executed in a confident Kerman color voice. The center medallion is a deep navy elongated diamond with serrated edges, opening into a stepped ivory cartouche that holds a small floral roundel in green and rose. The medallion sits on the magenta field with small floral bouquets above and below it as anchor points. The four corner spandrels are large and ivory, each carrying scrolling vinework and a single emerald green disc with a rose floret at the center, plus tan-and-blue arrowhead fillers that point back toward the medallion. The navy main border carries an alternating palmette and floral cluster motif on a deep indigo ground, while the outer magenta guard border is broad and richly drawn with vase-of-flowers motifs at the ends, palmettes, and stylized leaf forms.

Colors and Placement

The dominant tone is a saturated magenta in the field and outer border, played against deep navy in the medallion and main border, and balanced by warm ivory spandrels that open up the corners. Emerald green discs, gold accents, soft rose, light blue, and brown thread through the drawing and give the eye places to land between the larger color blocks. Some natural abrash, the soft horizontal banding of color that authentic vegetable-dyed wool develops as different dye batches are woven in, is visible in the magenta field, and this is a sign of an honest hand-knotted rug, not a flaw. At 7'11 by 11'5 this 8x11 piece is a classic large-room size, comfortable under an 8-seat dining table with chairs pulled back, anchoring a living room with the front legs of major furniture on the rug, filling a primary bedroom, or running long in a library or den. The magenta and navy palette is striking against ivory or white walls, dark wood floors, and rooms with cream, brass, or black accents, and it brings a saturated jewel-tone register to interiors that need a strong color anchor.

Origin and Construction

Kerman, in southeast Iran, is one of the great Persian weaving centers, with a tradition that traces back centuries and a reputation for fine wool, refined drawing, and a distinct color sensibility that ranges from soft pastels through these bolder saturated palettes. This piece is fully hand-knotted in 100% wool on a 100% cotton foundation at approximately 160 to 180 KPSI, woven about 40 years ago in the 1980s and kept unused since, which is why the pile sits full and the color reads as fresh as a newer rug. Kerman rugs at this density and scale, with classical medallion drawing and authentic abrash from natural dye work, are increasingly hard to find in unused condition.
