2'3" x 3'9" Persian Enjilas Rug | 3 Stepped Medallions | Salmon and Green | Beige Flower Border
Small in size but full of character, this 2'3" x 3'9" Persian Enjilas is hand-knotted in wool pile on a cotton foundation at approximately 180 to 220 knots per square inch, a solid village construction with a thick, springy pile. It still carries its original import label on the back, naming Enjilas as its province of origin. The rug has never been used, is in excellent condition and comes with a certificate of authenticity. It is a handy size among our small Persian rugs, made for a doorway, a bathroom, a bedside or a spot in front of the kitchen sink.
Design and Motifs
Three hexagonal medallions are stacked down the center of the field, linked tip to tip so they read as a single column. Each one is outlined in zigzag bands of salmon, dark green and black that step inward like ripples, and each holds a small diamond with an 8-pointed ivory flower at its heart. In the spaces around the column, the dark purple ground carries small stylized leaves and flower heads in blue, salmon and ivory. The beige main border is set with a lively mix of small motifs: tiny squares, 8-petaled flowers and paisley-like boteh in red, royal blue and green, held between red and purple guard stripes. The drawing is entirely geometric, built from short stepped lines, which gives the rug the strong, graphic look village weavers of the region are known for.
Salmon, Green and Dark Purple
Dark salmon is the color you notice first: it fills the stepped bands around each medallion and gives the rug a warm, slightly coral glow. Dark green alternates with it in the zigzag outlines, a deep foliage tone that makes the salmon look even brighter. Dark purple forms the ground of the field and the medallion centers, a rich, moody background for the small motifs. Red fills the outer guard stripe and many of the little border flowers, and royal blue appears in the border and among the field motifs, crisp cool accents against the warm tones. Ivory, beige, gray and light gray lighten the border and the flower centers, while dark brown and light brown draw outlines and smaller details. Together they make a palette that is earthy and lively at once, easy to pair with wood floors and natural textiles.
Enjilas Village Weaving
Enjilas is a weaving village in the Hamedan region of western Persia, one of hundreds in the area where rugs have long been knotted at home from sturdy local wool. Rugs from Enjilas have a reputation within the Hamedan group for careful drawing and good wool, and the village name is often spelled Enjelas or Endjlas, as on this rug's own import label. Small formats like this one were woven in quantity for everyday use around the home, which is why they are built to take traffic. They belong to the wider family of Persian Hamedan rugs, and this piece shows the village style in miniature, 3 stepped medallions in salmon and green on a deep purple ground.
