This Persian Bijar rug measures 6'6" x 10'4" and is an unusual one. Where most Bijars lead with bold geometry or an allover field, this piece centers a refined ivory medallion on a warm salmon rose ground, drawn with a delicacy you rarely see in the iron rugs of Persia. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and has never been used.
A Rare Drawing for Bijar
The elongated central medallion sits on an open ivory ground, edged with scrolling pendants and anchored by a stepped navy core with a small rosette at its heart. Matching ivory spandrels fill the four corners, and between them the entire field is covered in the fine mahi, or fish, pattern, a tireless lattice of tiny diamonds, rosettes, and curved leaves. The pale medallion and corners floating against the salmon field give the rug a formal, almost Tabriz-like elegance, yet the dense drawing and tight knotting are pure Bijar. This combination of a graceful curvilinear medallion with the hard-wearing Bijar weave is what makes the piece stand apart.
Colors and Placement
The field reads as a warm salmon rose, softer and earthier than the deep madder red most Bijars wear, carrying touches of terracotta where the light catches it, and worked with ivory, navy, gold, and a little sage green. A rust-red border of bold floral palmettes frames the whole. The lighter palette makes this a versatile choice for a formal living room or dining room where a darker rug would feel heavy. At this 7 x 10 size it anchors a seating group or sits comfortably under a dining table.
Origin and Construction
Bijar is a Kurdish town in northwest Persia whose weavers beat the wefts so tightly that the finished carpet is famously dense and durable, the quality behind the iron rug name. This example is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation at roughly 340 to 360 knots per square inch, fine enough to carry the delicate mahi field and the curved lines of the medallion.
