6'6" x 9'7" Persian Nain 9 LA Rug | Ivory Floral Field | Wool and Silk on Cotton

This 6'6" x 9'7" Persian Nain is a 9 LA piece hand-knotted in wool and silk on a cotton foundation, in the refined ivory-and-blue style that made Nain one of the most recognizable names in Persian weaving. A radiating central medallion floats on a soft ivory field of fine vine scroll and Shah Abbasi palmettes, framed by an ivory main border of the same delicate floral tracery. Silk is used to pick out the medallion drawing and many of the flowers, giving them a gentle sheen against the matte wool ground.

A note on condition. The rug itself is in excellent, never-used condition, with full pile, sound selvages and a clean, intact weave throughout. It does, however, carry a noticeable discoloration that occurred during production rather than from any use or wear, most visible around the border and in patches across the ivory field, as shown closely in the photos and video. Because of this color irregularity the piece is heavily discounted and priced well below a flawless Nain 9 LA of this size and quality. It is backed by our free returns policy, so you can see it in your own space with no risk.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is classic Nain: a layered round medallion at the center, built from a star of heart-shaped petals around a small floral rosette, with matching pendant forms above and below. Around it the field carries a balanced curvilinear pattern of thin vine scrolls, lotus palmettes and small blossoms in the Shah Abbasi tradition, with feathery leaves linking the flowers. The ivory main border repeats a graceful turtle-and-palmette vine, flanked by narrow floral guard stripes. Every element is finely articulated, the hallmark of the city's detailed, high-knot-count weaving.

Colors and Placement

The palette is the quiet, sophisticated scheme Nain is loved for: a creamy ivory ground worked with light blue, deep navy and soft brown, with touches of tan, taupe and pale green and small accents of dark red in the flowers. It is a calm, neutral coloring that suits formal and transitional rooms alike. At 6'6" x 9'7" the rug works well at the center of a living room, under a dining table, or in a bedroom or study, anchoring a seating group while keeping the room feeling light. Buyers should view it as a discounted, character piece rather than a showroom-perfect rug, given the color note above.

Origin and Construction

Nain lies on the edge of the central Persian desert near Isfahan, and its workshops are famous for finely knotted wool and silk rugs in pale, elegant palettes. The grade term LA refers to the number of plies in the cotton warp threads, and a 9 LA Nain like this one is a fine, tightly woven construction with silk used to highlight the design. You can read more in our complete guide to Nain rugs for background on the weave, grades and history. This example is hand-knotted in wool and silk on a cotton foundation with a wool and silk pile, and is structurally excellent apart from the production discoloration described above.
