7x10 Authentic Persian Bijar Iron Rug | Hand-Knotted Wool | 340 KPSI

This is an exceptional Persian Bijar rug in brand new, never-used condition, hand-knotted in pure wool on a cotton foundation at an exceptional 340 to 360 knots per square inch. Bijar rugs are famously known as the "iron rugs of Persia" for their legendary density and durability, and this 7x10 example with its 0.58 inch pile height and 340-360 KPSI knot count represents some of the finest workshop production coming out of Bijar today. The generous mid-size format makes it ideal for standard living rooms, family rooms, formal dining rooms seating six to eight, large bedrooms, and home offices where it can carry real presence without overwhelming the space. The classic rust red, navy, and ivory palette is the most iconic Bijar color combination and works effortlessly in traditional, transitional, and contemporary interiors.

Design and Motifs

The composition is a classic Bijar medallion-and-corner design executed with workshop-grade precision. At the center, a navy blue diamond medallion carries its own miniature Herati lattice of tiny rosettes and fish motifs, framed by a thin ivory outline. The medallion sits inside a larger concentric rust red diamond field that carries the same Herati pattern in a more open coloration. Four ivory shield-shaped corner spandrels anchor the field and carry a floral vocabulary of palmettes, curling leaves, and flowering vines. The rust red field between the medallion and the spandrels is covered edge to edge in the classic Mahi fish pattern, giving the entire composition a tightly unified feel. The rug is framed by an ivory main border carrying a graceful floral vine with dark navy palmettes, flanked by multiple narrow guard stripes that give the rug its polished finished edge.

Colors and Placement

The field reads as a warm rust red leaning toward terracotta, richer and softer than the pure crimson you see on most Bijar production, which is exactly what makes this palette so easy to decorate around. The navy medallion at the center anchors the composition with deep contrast, while the ivory corner spandrels and ivory main border lift the whole rug and keep it from ever feeling heavy. Throughout the Herati field you will find accents of burnt orange, soft gold, olive green, pale yellow, charcoal, and brown, giving the rug quiet chromatic depth without ever breaking from the rust, navy, and ivory framework. This rug pairs beautifully with warm wood tones, cream and linen upholstery, navy or brown accent pieces, and both traditional and transitional interiors. It is equally at home in a contemporary space that wants one strong traditional anchor piece with genuine craftsmanship.

Bijar Rugs and Construction

Bijar is a Kurdish weaving town in western Iran, and Bijar rugs are universally recognized as the most durable and densely woven of all Persian rugs, earning them the nickname "the iron rug of Persia." Bijar weavers use a specialized technique where the wool is wet-knotted and then beaten down extremely tightly with heavy metal combs during weaving, producing a pile so dense and compact that the rug feels almost rigid and metallic. At 340 to 360 knots per square inch, this piece sits at the top end of Bijar production and will easily last multiple generations with reasonable care. For a deeper look at Bijar weaving heritage and what makes these rugs last a lifetime, read our complete guide to Bijar rugs. A brand new Bijar at this knot density in a practical 7x10 room size is a serious collector piece and a genuine heirloom investment.
