6'9 x 9'10 Persian Tabriz 60 Raj | Wool and Silk on Silk Foundation | 500 KPSI

This 6'9 x 9'10 Persian Tabriz rug is a master workshop piece, hand-knotted at 60 raj density, approximately 500 knots per square inch, with a wool and silk pile on a pure silk foundation. 60 raj is the highest production tier in Tabriz weaving and a small number of master ateliers work at this fineness. A finely drawn star-burst medallion in navy with sage and mint green inner petals sits centered on a deep raspberry red field that carries an allover floral lattice, framed by classical ivory spandrels and a navy main border of palmettes flanked by mint green secondary borders. The silk highlights catch light differently from the wool, giving the drawing a subtle dimensional shimmer when the rug is viewed from different angles.

Design and Motifs

The composition is a textbook master-workshop lachak-toranj (medallion-and-corner) layout drawn with extraordinary precision. The central toranj is a multi-tiered star medallion: a tan and sky-blue core opens into a ring of mint and sage green petals, then a band of navy filled with intricate cloud bands and palmettes, then ivory and salmon outer arabesques. Pendant cartouches drop above and below into the field. The ivory spandrels carry generous rust and burnt-orange accents with curling cloud-band arabesques in sky blue. The red field is woven with a delicate allover lattice of palmettes, tiny floral rosettes, leaf forms, and curling vinework, the kind of drawing only 60 raj knotting can resolve. The main border is built on a navy ground with rosette-and-palmette repeats, framed by mint green secondary borders that give the rug its distinctive Tabriz workshop signature.

Colors and Placement

The palette is anchored by a deep raspberry red field, lifted by navy in the medallion and main border and balanced by mint and sage green throughout the medallion core and secondary borders. Ivory in the spandrels brings light to the corners, while rust and burnt orange add warmth at the spandrel inner edges. Accent colors include sky blue, peach, salmon, olive, and cream woven in finely scaled floral detail. Silk highlights run through the medallion, the spandrels, and the floral drawing in the field, picking up light at different angles and giving the surface a quiet sheen. At 6'9 by 9'10 this works as a formal area rug in a living room with the front legs of furniture on the rug, under a 6-seat dining table with chairs fully on the rug, in a primary bedroom centered under the bed, in a study or library, or in a formal entry or gallery.

Origin and Construction

Hand-knotted in Tabriz in northwest Persia at the highest workshop tier, this rug is built on a pure silk foundation with a wool and silk pile at 60 raj density, equivalent to roughly 500 knots per square inch. Raj is the traditional Tabriz unit of knot density (knots per 7cm of horizontal weave), and 60 raj sits at the top of the production scale, achievable only in workshops led by master weavers. The silk warps allow finer detail than cotton can support, and the silk highlights woven into the pile sit alongside the wool to add reflective contrast across the drawing. This piece is in excellent never-used condition with full original pile, intact silk fringes, and crisp selvages.
