8'2 x 11'5 Persian Kerman Rug | Lavar Sunburst Medallion | Crimson Field | 180 to 200 KPSI

A note on the field: in person, you will see a soft, gentle gradation across the deep red ground, where the color shifts almost imperceptibly between slightly cooler and slightly warmer tones. This is called abrash. It is not a flaw, it is a hallmark of natural dye work, the visible signature of wool dyed in small batches by hand. Abrash is what separates a real handmade rug from a synthetic reproduction, and on a piece this fine it adds depth and life that flat machine color can never replicate. Please also note that the dark marks visible across the field in some photos are shadows from the lighting during photography, not marks on the rug itself.

This is one of those Kerman rugs that stops you mid-step. The medallion does not sit politely in the center of the field, it explodes outward in a sunburst of lobed petals, each one filled with its own miniature flower garden, with sprays of palmettes and rosettes shooting outward like fireworks frozen at the moment of bloom. The crimson field around it is unusually open and confident, letting the medallion breathe and the cornerpieces speak. To understand where this design language comes from and why master Kerman weavers became famous for compositions like this, see our complete guide to Persian rug history, craft, and regional styles.

Design and Motifs

The central medallion is a Lavar Kerman sunburst, a layered composition where a navy and ivory floral core is surrounded by radiating lobes, each one a stylized garden bouquet rendered in miniature. Above and below the medallion, twin pendant cartouches extend the vertical axis with smaller floral sprays. The four corners are filled with ivory and navy spandrels containing scrolling vines, palmettes, and bouquet motifs that mirror the medallion in reverse. Between the medallion and the corners, the deep red field is left intentionally open, a confident decision that lets the eye rest and makes the surrounding ornament hit harder. This is the Lavar tradition at its most refined, where what is left out matters as much as what is woven in.

Colors and Placement

The palette is the rare combination that makes this piece unusual for a Kerman of this size. The field is a true crimson red, deep and saturated, set against a dark navy main border filled with palmette rosettes in soft pink, ivory, and gold. The minor borders are a clear cornflower blue, a color that sits between sky blue and periwinkle and is far less common in Kerman work than ivory or red guard stripes. The medallion brings in soft yellows, pale blues, salmon pink, and gold against navy, all of it lit up by the open red ground. At 8'2 x 11'5 it is a true 8 x 11 sized for a formal living room, a dining room with a 6 to 8 seat table, a master bedroom under a king with the foot exposed, or a paneled library. The cornflower blue secondary border will pull in any blue accents in upholstery or drapery, and the navy will ground darker furniture without competing.

Origin and Construction

Kerman sits in the southeastern Iranian desert and has been weaving rugs for the Safavid court and beyond for over four centuries, with the Lavar (also spelled Ravar) tradition representing the absolute top tier of the city's output. This rug is hand-knotted in 100% wool pile on a cotton foundation at 180 to 200 knots per square inch, a density that lets the weaver render the curling acanthus leaves, the eight-petal rosettes, and the fine vine work in the medallion with the precision you see here. The wool has the soft, slightly lustrous handle that good Kerman wool develops, and the rug is in excellent never used condition, with full pile, full fringes, and tight selvages. To understand why wool from Kerman behaves the way it does and why it ages so beautifully under foot, our complete guide to handmade rug materials walks through the differences in fiber, dye, and foundation that separate one weaving tradition from another.
