9'6 x 12'5 Persian Najafabad Rug | Red Field | Navy Floral Border | 200 KPSI Wool

This 9'6 x 12'5 Persian Najafabad rug is a fully hand-knotted, all-wool piece on a cotton foundation, drawn at roughly 180 to 200 knots per square inch. The composition pairs a soft navy central medallion with a densely populated allover floral field on a deep red ground, framed by a navy main border of palmettes and curling acanthus vines. Najafabad rugs draw directly on the Isfahan tradition (the town sits just outside Isfahan) and are recognized for taking that fine floral drawing and rendering it on a sturdier wool-on-cotton structure that wears as a true room-size piece. About 35 years old, it has been stored carefully and shows no use.

Design and Motifs

A navy lobed medallion sits at the center, filled with a pale ivory and sky-blue floral rosette and ringed by curling leaf vines. From it, a fully populated allover field unfolds in every direction: Shah Abbas palmettes, lotus blossoms, ivory leaf sprays, and small bud clusters connected by a thin scrolling vine. The four corner spandrels mirror the medallion in compressed navy quarter-arcs. The main border is a deep navy band of large palmettes alternating with sprays of leaves and small rosettes, supported by two slim ivory and sky-blue guard borders that contain a delicate trailing vine. The drawing is disciplined and symmetrical throughout, the kind of pattern density that requires fine knotting to render cleanly.

Colors and Placement

The palette is the classical Persian formal pairing: a deep, true red field set against a saturated navy border, with ivory, golden tan, sky blue, sage green, and small touches of terracotta carrying the floral detail. The red sits warm rather than orange, and the navy reads almost black at low angles before opening up under direct light. At 9'6 x 12'5 it scales as a generous room-size piece, suited to a formal living room, dining room (with a standard 6 to 8 person table centered on the medallion), large bedroom, library, or executive office. The traditional palette will anchor a transitional or classical interior without overpowering it.

Origin and Construction

Hand-knotted in Najafabad in central Persia, this rug uses a cotton foundation and an all-wool pile at roughly 180 to 200 knots per square inch, which is exactly the density the palmette-and-vine drawing needs to read this cleanly. Najafabad weaving sits in the broader Isfahan design family, sharing the same vocabulary of floral palmettes and finely drawn vines but produced as a heavier, more practical floor rug rather than a collector silk piece. At about 35 years old this example has been carefully stored and remains in excellent never-used condition, with full original pile, intact selvages, and clean ivory fringes.
