Rare Oversize 9'6 x 12'6 Persian Isfahan Rug, Allover Floral on Deep Red Ground, 220 to 240 KPSI Wool on Cotton

Please note: any lines, waves, or shadows visible in the photographs are simply temporary creases from folding and pallet storage. The rug relaxes flat once laid down, and every piece is professionally ironed before it ships.

This is the rug that anchors a serious room. A deep ruby red field carries an allover composition of scrolling vinework and ivory rosette discs that float across the ground like lanterns, with no central medallion and no corner spandrels, an Isfahan workshop variation that puts the full focus on the field itself. The drawing is fine, the wool is full, and at roughly 35 years old this piece has never been on a floor. For more on what makes Isfahan workshop rugs exceptional, see our complete guide to Isfahan rugs.

Design and Motifs

The field is an allover composition built from a continuous network of split-leaf arabesques, curling vines, and small palmettes, punctuated by ivory rosette discs distributed in a calm rhythm across the entire ground. Each ivory disc reads almost as a miniature medallion, framed by slate blue vinework and tiny red, gold, and rose blossoms. This is a more open and breathable take on the Isfahan tradition than the usual central-medallion-with-spandrels layout, and it lets the eye rest on the rosettes individually rather than chasing a single focal point. The navy main border carries an alternating palmette and stylized vase motif on a deep indigo ground, framed on both sides by ivory rosette-chain guard borders that echo the field discs.

Colors and Placement

The palette runs deep ruby red in the field against a saturated navy border, with ivory, slate blue, light sky blue, soft gold, rose, and touches of green threaded through the vinework. The contrast between red field and navy border is decisive without being harsh, and the ivory rosette discs and guard borders open the composition up and keep the rug from feeling heavy. At 9'6 by 12'6 this is a true 10x13 piece, which means it covers a 10-seat dining table with chairs pulled back, anchors a large living or family room with all furniture on the rug, fills a formal foyer, or lays end-to-end in a long library or great room. The deep red and navy palette reads particularly well in rooms with dark wood, leather, brass, and warm neutrals, and it works equally in formal traditional and transitional interiors.

Origin and Construction

Isfahan, in central Iran, is one of the great court-tradition weaving centers of Persia, and its workshop output is known worldwide for fineness of knot, restrained classical drawing, and disciplined color. This piece is fully hand-knotted in 100% wool on a 100% cotton foundation at approximately 220 to 240 KPSI, woven about 35 years ago and kept unused since, which is why the pile sits full and the color reads as fresh as a newer rug. Oversize Isfahans at this knot count are not common production, the workshop economics generally push the finest weaves into smaller formats, which makes a 10x13 Isfahan at this density a relatively rare offering.
