9'6 x 13 Persian Kerman Rug | Lavar Cartouche Medallion | Crimson Field with Turquoise Borders | 200 KPSI

A note on condition: this rug is being offered at a deeply discounted price because it shows visible abrash across the field and several areas of softer pile wear that are documented in the photographs and accompanying video. The abrash, which is the natural shift in tone where vegetable dyed wool was woven from different batches, is what gives the field its lived-in, antique quality. The pile wear is purely cosmetic, the foundation is fully sound, and the rug lies flat and even. For a buyer who appreciates patina and character over flawlessness, this is an exceptional value on a piece that would otherwise sell at a much higher price point. Please also note that any dark patches you may see in some photos are shadows from the lighting during photography, not marks on the rug.

There is a particular kind of Persian rug that the trade calls a character piece. It is not a museum specimen and it is not a brand new showroom piece, it is something that has lived a little, that carries the visible signature of vegetable dyes and human hands and decades on a floor, and that reads in person as warmer, softer, and more interesting than any flawless rug ever could. This Lavar Kerman is exactly that kind of piece. The lobed cartouche medallion floats above an open crimson field, the ivory cornerpieces brim with bouquets of pale flowers, and the turquoise green minor border, an unusual choice in Kerman work, ties the whole composition together with a freshness that feels almost antique. To understand the Lavar Kerman tradition and why pieces like this have always been collected for character rather than perfection, see our complete guide to Persian rug history, craft, and regional styles.

Design and Motifs

The composition is the classical Lavar Kerman cartouche format. At the center sits a layered lobed medallion, navy outer lobes wrapping an ivory inner reserve filled with palmette rosettes and curling vines, with twin pendant cartouches extending the vertical axis above and below. The four corners are filled with large ivory spandrels, each one containing a hand drawn bouquet of pale roses, blue and salmon florals, and slender stems with leaves trailing toward the field. Around the medallion, sprays of small white blossoms are scattered like wildflowers across the open red ground, almost as if the field were a garden rather than a textile. This is the Lavar formula at its most lyrical, where the formal architecture of the medallion is softened by the casual scatter of the field.

Colors and Placement

The palette is what makes this piece feel different from a standard Kerman. The field is a deep crimson red shifting to rose, the cartouche medallion reads in deep navy with ivory, gold, and salmon highlights, the cornerpieces are ivory ground with rose, sage, and pale blue florals, and the most unusual element is the turquoise green minor border that frames the dark navy main border on both sides. This turquoise note is uncommon in Kerman work and gives the rug an antique, almost Caucasian feeling that pulls it out of the standard formal vocabulary. At 9'6 x 13 it is a true 9 x 13 to 10 x 13, sized for a generous formal living room, a dining room with an eight to ten seat table, a master bedroom under a king with the foot exposed, or a paneled library. The crimson and turquoise combination works beautifully in transitional and bohemian interiors, in spaces with patinated wood, in eclectic rooms with mixed wood tones, and as a layered statement on top of natural fiber rugs.

Origin and Construction

Kerman sits in the southeastern Iranian desert and has been weaving rugs for over four centuries, with the Lavar (also spelled Ravar) sub-tradition representing the most refined drawing and finest knot work the city produces. This rug is hand-knotted in 100% wool pile on a cotton foundation at 200 knots per square inch, a density that lets the weaver render the fine acanthus scroll work in the medallion and the delicate bouquets in the cornerpieces with full clarity. The pile shows the soft luster that good Kerman wool develops with age, and while there are areas of softer pile and visible abrash documented in the listing photos, the foundation is intact, the selvages are tight, and the fringes are full. Pieces like this have always been collected for the very qualities that disqualify them as showroom rugs: character, patina, and the visible record of a hand-dyed, hand-woven object that has been part of someone's life. To understand why Kerman wool ages this way and what the structural difference is between a sound character piece and a damaged rug, our complete guide to handmade rug materials walks through the differences in fiber, dye, and foundation that matter most.
