9'8 x 12'8 Persian Tabriz Rug | Sky Blue Field | Crimson Star Medallion | Wool on Cotton
This is a strikingly beautiful 10x13 Persian Tabriz rug in an uncommon and highly desirable sky blue colorway, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation at roughly 240 to 260 knots per square inch. The generous 10x13 size makes it ideal for larger living rooms, formal dining rooms, and family rooms where it can anchor full seating arrangements or run the length of a ten to twelve person dining table. Condition is pristine, never used, with a full even pile and crisp drawing throughout. The combination of the luminous blue ground, the deep crimson medallion, and the richly layered floral vocabulary gives this piece a freshness and visual lift that sets it apart from the more common red-ground Tabriz production.
Please note that any waves, shadows, or wrinkles visible in some of the photographs are simply the result of the rug being folded and stored on pallets during transit. They are not permanent and will completely flatten out within a few days of being laid on the floor. We also professionally iron every rug before shipment to ensure it arrives in the best possible condition. See Video
Design and Motifs
The composition centers on a large eight-lobed star-shaped medallion in deep crimson red, anchored by an ivory and gold inner core of stylized petals and tiny floral forms. The medallion is crowned at top and bottom by elongated pendant finials that extend into the open field. Around and beyond the medallion, the sky blue field is populated with a rich garden vocabulary: flowering vases rising from the upper and lower ends, scattered bouquets, curling serrated leaves, floral sprays, and paired vertical flowering branches. The design reads as a formal medallion rug laid over a more informal all-over flowering garden, which is a signature of the best Tabriz workshop drawing. The crimson red main border carries a classical floral vine with alternating rosettes and palmettes, flanked by multiple ivory and seafoam guard stripes that give the rug its polished finished edge.
Colors and Placement
The field reads as a luminous sky blue, soft and open, with hints of turquoise in the right light. The central medallion is drawn in a deep crimson red that punches forward against the cool ground, with ivory, gold, and pale blue accents inside the lobes for added depth. The crimson main border picks up and echoes the medallion, creating a strong color frame around the softer interior. Scattered throughout the floral work are pale pink, coral, burgundy, navy, seafoam green, olive green, soft lavender, and yellow, giving the garden palette a full chromatic range without ever feeling busy. This rug will shine in rooms with ivory or pale walls, cool-toned upholstery, and natural wood tones, and it also pairs beautifully with more traditional or transitional interiors where a sky blue foundation is desired. It is equally at home in contemporary spaces looking for a single statement antique-style anchor.
Tabriz Rugs and Construction
Tabriz is a historic city in northwestern Iran, in East Azerbaijan, and one of the most important rug-weaving centers in the entire Persian tradition, with a weaving heritage that reaches back to the Safavid court workshops of the sixteenth century. Tabriz weavers are known for their precise curvilinear drawing, their wide design vocabulary that ranges from classical medallion formats to pictorial and garden compositions, and their disciplined use of wool pile on a cotton foundation. This rug is hand-knotted entirely by hand, knot by knot, with a durable wool pile that will age gracefully and hold its color for generations with reasonable care. The combination of size, condition, and the uncommon sky blue palette makes this a genuine piece of collectible Persian weaving for the right home.
