Persian Tabriz | Made in Persia

Condition: Very good | Vintage | Some abrash (natural dye variation)

This is a vintage Persian Tabriz in the allover style, woven roughly 40 years ago and measuring a generous 10 x 13'5". Instead of a central medallion, the rusty red field carries one continuous floral program from border to border, a format decorators prize because it reads beautifully from every seat in the room and no furniture placement ever covers "the design." For anyone furnishing a large space, 10 x 13 rugs in genuine vintage condition are far scarcer than their new counterparts.

A note on abrash: This rug shows some abrash, the soft horizontal shifts in color tone that occur when a weaver moves to a new batch of hand-dyed wool. It is not damage or fading; it is the signature of small-batch natural dyeing and one of the traits collectors use to confirm a rug is genuinely handmade and of age. We point it out honestly in our photos and video rather than editing it away.

Design and Motifs

The field presents the classic Tabriz allover repeat: rows of Shah Abbas palmettes, rosettes, and blossoming vines drawn in beige, cream, French blue, rose, and dark green across the rusty red ground, all connected by a fine network of scrolling tendrils. The drawing stays disciplined and evenly spaced in the Tabriz manner, so the rug reads as richly patterned rather than busy. A navy main border carries its own procession of palmettes and floral sprays between lighter guard bands, framing the field the way a good frame finishes a painting.

Colors and Placement

Rusty red with navy and beige is the warmest of the traditional Persian palettes, equally at home with antique furniture, leather, and dark wood as with modern neutral interiors that want one grounding statement. The mellow vintage tones mean it arrives already harmonized, with none of the harshness of a freshly dyed rug. The red ground hides traffic and the allover pattern conceals everyday life even further, which makes this a practical choice for a busy living room, family room, or a dining room where the full furniture grouping sits on the rug.

Origin and Construction

Tabriz, in northwest Persia, is one of the oldest and most technically respected weaving centers in the world, and its allover designs descend directly from the classical carpets of the Safavid court. This piece is hand-knotted at 160 to 180 knots per square inch with a wool pile on a cotton foundation, the construction that has carried Tabriz rugs through generations of daily use. Woven around 40 years ago, it has the character, patina, and abrash that only time gives a rug, and vintage Persian pieces of this size have become genuinely difficult to source since the import landscape changed.
