10'2 x 15'11" Persian Najafabad Rug | Red Field, Blue Medallion | Oversize, Never Used
This is a Persian Najafabad in a generous 10'2 x 15'11", a true room-filling size. It is about 30 years old but looks like it was made today, never used and beautifully kept. Najafabad sits just outside Isfahan in central Persia, and the town's rugs are built the way Isfahan taught, refined in drawing and famously sturdy underfoot. This one is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation at roughly 220 to 230 knots per square inch, about 15 knots to the running inch, with a deep red field, a blue and navy central medallion and soft cream corners. Every rug we ship includes a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The layout is the classic Persian medallion and corner. At the center sits a lobed star medallion, worked in blue and navy florals around a pale flowering core and finished with slender pendants reaching toward each end. The four corner spandrels answer it in cream, so the eye is carried from center to edge the way a formal Persian design intends. Filling the red ground between them is a dense, graceful field of palmettes, rosettes and curling vines, the Isfahan drawing that Najafabad is known for. Framing everything is a deep navy main border carrying a floral vine of palmettes and roses, set between several narrow guard stripes in blue and cream. It is a balanced, traditional composition that reads as rich without ever feeling crowded.
Color and Palette
The color is warm and classic. A true Persian red carries the field, and against it the pattern is drawn in navy and clear medium blue, ivory and cream, soft gold, green and touches of rose. The medallion and corners lift the design with their cooler blues and pale grounds, while the navy border gives the whole rug a strong, dark frame. Nothing is faded or washed here: after three decades the colors are still deep and even, exactly the kind of rich, grounded palette that has anchored formal rooms for generations and works beautifully under warm light.
Origin and Weave
Najafabad is a weaving town near Isfahan, and its rugs share the Isfahan design language while being prized for their durability and value, a serious hand-knotted Persian rug built to be lived on. Woven in wool on a cotton foundation at 220 to 230 knots per square inch, this piece has held its shape and color perfectly across about thirty years. In a 10'2 x 15'11" it is a genuine large-room rug, at home among our oversize rugs, and an easy way to bring a classic Persian floor into a formal living or dining room.
