This Persian Tabriz rug measures 10' x 13' and is a fine, formal piece worked in wool and silk on a silk foundation at roughly 500 knots per square inch. A deep navy field carries an intricate allover vase design, and the silk highlights catch the light as you move around the room.

Vase and Millefleurs Design

Rather than a single medallion, the navy field is filled top to bottom with rows of slender flowering vases and a dense scatter of small blossoms, the millefleurs or thousand-flower drawing that Tabriz weavers reserve for their most detailed work. The very high knot count lets every tiny flower head and tendril read crisply, and the palette of sky blue, brick red, rose, sage, and ivory keeps the dark ground lively. A brick-red turtle border with flowering vines and sky-blue guard stripes frames the field and ties the whole composition together.

Materials and Knotting

Tabriz, in northwest Persia, is the city most associated with fine, precisely drawn workshop rugs, and this piece is a clear example. The wool-and-silk pile sits on a silk foundation, a combination that allows both the high knot density and the subtle sheen that lifts the lighter motifs. At about 500 knots per square inch the drawing is exceptionally fine for a rug of this size.

Condition and Placement

Woven in the 1980s, this rug has been beautifully kept and presents as though it were made today, with full pile and fresh, clean color. It has never been used. At 10' x 13' it works as a formal living room or dining room rug with room for a full furniture group. To explore similar pieces, browse our Tabriz rugs or wool and silk rugs collection.
