Design and Motifs

The center holds a stepped diamond medallion with a navy core and an eight-point star at its heart, surrounded by a finely latticed trellis fill. Above and below it, ivory pendant cartouches drop into the field and carry the eye through the length of the rug. Around the medallion, classic Nain floral work spreads across the ground, palmettes, rosettes, slim curling vines, and small paisley accents tucked into the navy spandrels. The main border continues the language of the field with linked flowers and leaves on a dark navy ground, framed by an ivory minor border of vine and rosette and twin twisted rope guards.

Colors and Placement

The palette is the classic Nain combination, ivory and dark navy doing most of the work, with sky blue and cobalt accents threaded through the floral motifs and small touches of beige and brown for contour. Nain is a small city southeast of Isfahan in central Iran, and its weaving tradition grew out of the broader Isfahan school in the twentieth century. This piece is hand-knotted in 100% wool pile on a cotton foundation at roughly 180 to 220 knots per square inch, the standard quality range that most Nain weaving falls into.
