4'2" x 6'8" Persian Isfahan Wool and Silk Rug Signed by Davari with Salmon Field, Rose Cartouches, and Bird Vocabulary
This 4'2" x 6'8" Persian Isfahan is a signed Davari workshop piece, executed in the design tradition that has earned Isfahan its reputation as one of the most refined weaving cities in the world. The composition departs from the standard medallion format and instead presents a soft salmon field densely populated with curling vine work, six framed rose cartouches arranged symmetrically around the rug, paired birds and peacocks scattered across the ground, and a pair of central indigo cartouche anchors that organize the field along a strong vertical axis. The pile is kork wool with silk highlights woven onto a pure silk foundation, and the knot density reaches 500 KPSI, which is master workshop territory in Isfahan production. For broader context on what makes an Isfahan a world reference for fine Persian weaving, our complete guide to Isfahan rugs covers the city's weaving heritage, its master workshops, and the design language they have refined over centuries.
Design and Motifs
The composition is a paradise garden field organized around two indigo cartouche anchors that sit on the vertical axis of the rug, one near the top and one near the bottom, both filled with stylized palmettes and vine work. Around them, six identical ivory-bordered rose cartouches are arranged symmetrically across the field, each framing a fully drawn cabbage rose in deep ruby and pink with a butterfly resting beside it. Between and around these anchors, the salmon ground is filled with curling vines, lotus heads, and small flower clusters, and populated with paired birds in flight and elegant ground birds that look like cranes or peacocks rendered in soft grey, navy, and ivory. The drawing is the kind that rewards close inspection. Every bird sits on a vine that resolves into a flower, every cartouche is balanced by another across the rug, and nothing in the field is repeated by accident. The navy main border carries large rosette palmettes connected by elegant scrolling acanthus and vine work in soft pink, ivory, and brown, with small yellow songbirds woven into the scrollwork at intervals. Floral guard borders in ivory and sky blue step the design out cleanly to the edge. Along the bottom edge, the master weaver's signature cartouche identifies this rug as a Davari piece.
Colors and Placement
The palette is unusual and beautifully resolved. The field is a warm salmon that reads as soft peach in some light and dusty rose in others, set against a deep navy main border that frames it like a window. The rose cartouches carry deep ruby and soft pink with ivory halos, the indigo cartouches anchor the center axis, and small touches of sage green, olive, gold, sky blue, and soft brown carry the floral and bird vocabulary across the field. The silk highlights catch the light differently from the kork wool ground, so the rug visibly shifts in tone depending on the angle of view and the direction of the pile, which is one of the signatures of fine Isfahan production. The 4'2" x 6'8" footprint is a classic Isfahan accent size, ideal in front of a sofa in a smaller living room, in front of a fireplace, in a formal entryway, in a study or library, beside a bed, or as the centerpiece of an intimate sitting room. Pairs naturally with traditional, classical, and transitional interiors, with antique and reproduction furniture, and with rooms that are designed around one truly fine art piece on the floor. The salmon palette is also unusually flexible with modern interiors that lean warm.
Persian Isfahan Rugs and the Davari Workshop
Isfahan has been one of the great centers of Persian art for more than four hundred years, dating back to the Safavid court of Shah Abbas the Great, when the city was rebuilt as the imperial capital and its workshops set the standard for the entire Persian rug-making tradition. Modern Isfahan production carries that lineage forward through a small number of master weaver workshops whose names appear in signature cartouches at the base of their rugs, and Davari is among the well-respected names in that tradition. A signed Davari Isfahan is not a generic city rug. It is a workshop piece, designed by a master, woven by skilled weavers under his supervision, and produced in small numbers using the finest materials Isfahan has access to. This rug uses kork wool, the soft wool taken from the underbelly and neck of young Persian lambs, with silk used for the highlights inside the design vocabulary, and it is woven on a pure silk foundation that allows the knots to be packed at the 500 KPSI density visible in the precision of the bird and flower drawing. The rug is roughly thirty years old and has never been put down for use, which is why the pile is intact and the colors still read at full saturation. For more on choosing between fine wool and silk constructions, our guide to wool versus silk rugs walks through what each material brings to a piece like this one.
