It measures 6' x 9'3", it is hand-knotted entirely in silk on a cotton foundation, and it is new and never used, with no wear, no repairs and no restoration anywhere on the pile. The dom, or dome, drawing throws a huge sunburst medallion across a midnight navy field, and because the pile is silk the whole design changes tone as you walk around it: gold from one end, cool sky blue from the other. Design and Motifs

The dom design is architectural in origin: it reads like the underside of a domed ceiling seen from directly below. A small octagonal rosette sits at dead center, wrapped in a tight ring of blue petals, then an ivory and gold star medallion, then long tapering rays that shoot outward almost to the inner border. Between those rays are slate blue and sky blue panels filled with curling vine, palmettes and small flower heads, each one drawn in miniature and mirrored perfectly across the long axis. The navy field behind all of it is not left empty either; it carries a dense all over scatter of tiny blossoms and leaf sprays, woven a shade or two lighter than the ground so the pattern reveals itself only up close. Pendant cartouches hang from the medallion at top and bottom, and the main border runs a steady rhythm of shield shaped palmettes and gold vine framed by two ivory guard stripes of rosettes and reciprocal leaf tips.

Deep Navy, Sky Blue and Gold

The palette is built almost entirely from blue, which is why the gold reads so strongly. The field is a true deep navy, close to indigo at the corners and lifting toward a clearer blue where the light catches the silk. Against it the medallion rays are drawn in ivory and warm peach cream, with the center rosette glowing a soft apricot tone in close-up. The panels between the rays use two distinct blues, a dusty slate and a brighter sky blue, and the main border picks up the brighter of the two for its ground. Gold appears as outlining and as small flame shaped accents on the palmettes rather than as a mass, and black navy is used sparingly for contour lines that keep every flower crisp. Ivory carries the guard stripes and the fringe. The overall effect in a room is jewel toned and formal, cool in daylight and much warmer under lamplight.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This piece was made in China, where the finest silk weaving workshops produce some of the most tightly knotted floor work available today. The knot count here is high enough to carry curved line, and that is the real test of a design like this: every ray tapers to a needle point, every vine bends without stepping, and the miniature flower heads in the field hold their shape at less than a fingernail across. The photographs of the reverse show the design coming through cleanly on the back, an even, fine and regular grid with no pulled rows.
