Nain is a small town in central Persia, near Isfahan, that only began weaving rugs in the 1930s, when its master cloak-weavers turned their fine textile skill toward rug weaving. Within a generation the town's name became a byword for refinement: disciplined, symmetrical drawing, very high knot counts, restrained palettes built on ivory, beige, and blue, and the signature use of silk highlights on a soft kork wool ground. This page is not a lesson. It is a walk through our own Nain shelves, so you can see the range for yourself and click straight through to any rug that catches your eye.
A quick word on "LA." Nain quality is graded by the number of threads twisted into each warp strand, written as LA (or La).
A higher number is a thicker warp and a slightly coarser weave: a 12 LA is a beautiful, durable wool Nain. A 9 LA or 9 LAA is finer, usually with silk highlights. A 6 LA (shesh la) is the finest standard Nain, woven with silk on a silk foundation at extraordinary knot densities. And Habibian is not a grade but a name, the most celebrated master weaving house in Nain history, whose signed rugs are collected worldwide. Every certificate of authenticity we issue records exactly which of these you are holding.
