This is workshop weaving at the level where the drawing, not the size, is the achievement. The rug measures 9'11" x 13'4" and sells as one of the more usable 10x13 Persian rugs for a formal room, but what you notice first is the surface: an ivory ground carrying a continuous curling vine, wool with silk highlights raised against the matte pile so the flowers catch light as you walk past. It is woven at 60 Raj, roughly 480 to 500 knots per square inch, on a full silk foundation, which is what lets the artist draw a true curve instead of a stepped approximation. The end panel carries a woven signature, Tabriz Tahre Mitra, and every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The pattern is Shiva Galam, one of the classic Tabriz workshop drawings, built around a round central medallion with a black 8 petal rosette at its core, a camel ring holding it, and tier after tier of palmettes radiating outward. Around that medallion the ivory field is not empty for a single inch: split leaves, rosettes, small carnations and long serrated saz leaves ride a vine system that mirrors perfectly across both axes. The field is closed by a camel colored cusped frame, outlined in near black cartouche scrollwork at the four corners, which throws the ivory forward and keeps the composition from drifting. The main border runs a soft aqua ground with an alternating palmette and blossom vine, flanked by mocha brown bands carrying their own smaller palmettes, and the whole thing finishes in a fine ivory guard stripe and hand-tied fringe.

A Quiet Palette of Ivory, Rose and Aqua

The field reads as a warm ivory, closer to fresh cream than white, and it stays that way across the whole 13 feet with no abrash. Sitting on it, the medallion works through dusty rose and a soft brick salmon into mocha brown, with powder blue leaves threaded through every tier and a band of camel gold circling the black center. The camel frame around the field is a shade deeper than the medallion gold, warm and slightly tan. The main border is the surprise: a pale aqua, almost a green-touched sky blue, cool against all that warmth, carrying blossoms in blush pink, ivory and sage green with small black centers. Mocha brown bands separate the border from the field, and the sparing black outlines throughout are what give the drawing its definition. The overall effect is soft and light, a rug that brightens a room rather than anchoring it in red.

Tabriz and the 60 Raj Standard

Tabriz sits in northwestern Persia and has been the country's most disciplined weaving city for centuries, the place where the design studio and the loom stay in the same conversation. Tabriz measures fineness in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of about 2.75 inches. 40 Raj is commercial goods, 50 Raj is genuinely fine, and 60 Raj is where a workshop stops producing volume and starts producing pieces like this one, roughly 480 to 500 knots per square inch. That density plus the silk foundation is exactly what the Shiva Galam drawing demands, because a curved vine that has to travel unbroken across 13 feet only stays curved if the weaver has enough knots to bend it. The woven signature at the end, Tabriz Tahre Mitra, is the workshop putting its name to the result.
