This is a signed vintage Persian Mashad rug, hand-knotted roughly thirty-five years ago in the city of Mashad in northeastern Persia. A deep raspberry red field carries a dense all-over floral pattern gathered around a soft central medallion, framed by a taupe and grey border of stars and rosettes. The rug bears a woven signature cartouche along the top, a mark of a named workshop, and despite its age it was stored and never put into use, so it remains in excellent condition with full pile. At 10 by 13 feet it is a generous room-size piece with the depth of color and fine detail that Mashad weaving is known for.
Design and Motifs
The raspberry field is filled edge to edge with curling vinework, palmettes, boteh, leafy rosettes, and small vase motifs, all radiating from a central floral star medallion set on a soft grey ground. Scattered cream and indigo cartouches and lozenges break up the red, giving the pattern movement without a hard, rigid layout. The wide main border runs on a taupe and grey ground with eight-point star rosettes and floral palmettes, bracketed by ivory and indigo guard stripes that frame the field cleanly on every side.
