8 x 9'4 Persian Tabriz 50 Raj | Ivory Field Wool and Silk Pile | 400 KPSI Fine Workshop
This 8 x 9'4 Persian Tabriz rug is a fine workshop piece, hand-knotted at 50 raj density, approximately 400 knots per square inch, with a wool and silk pile on a cotton foundation. 50 raj sits at the upper workshop tier of Tabriz production, fine enough to render the kind of delicate floral lattice this rug displays cleanly across every inch of the field. A small central rosette medallion floats in a busy allover field of palmettes, vines, and flowering branches drawn on ivory, framed by generous mint green corner spandrels with salmon and coral pink accents and a tan and ivory main border carrying floral cartouches. Silk highlights run through the floral detail, picking up light against the wool pile and giving the surface a soft, dimensional sheen.
Design and Motifs
The composition is an unusual variation on the classical Tabriz workshop format. Rather than dominating the field, the medallion here is small and almost incidental, a delicate floral rosette inside a stepped cartouche surrounded by paired arabesque leaves. The real visual weight sits in the corners, where large mint green spandrels with salmon and coral inner edges sweep into the field, creating a frame-within-a-frame composition that lets the central field read as a continuous ivory garden. That field is woven with an exceptionally dense allover lattice of palmettes, leaf forms, curling vinework, and small flowering branches, the kind of fine drawing only 50 raj knotting can resolve at this scale. The main border on tan and ivory carries floral cartouches with bird and bouquet motifs alternating with palmette rosettes, framed by slim guard borders that step the eye out cleanly to the edge.
Colors and Placement
The palette is built around an ivory field, soft and luminous, with mint green and sage in the spandrels and salmon, coral pink, and rose accents that pull the spandrels toward warm. Tan and beige carry the main border, with rust, brown, sky blue, olive, and deep red woven into the floral detail throughout. This is a softer, more neutral Tabriz palette than the saturated reds that the city is best known for, and the silk highlights in the floral drawing add quiet reflective contrast against the matte wool. At 8 x 9'4 this is a versatile area rug size that works under a coffee table grouping in a living room with the front legs of furniture on the rug, in a dining room under a 4 to 6 seat table with chairs fully on the rug, under a queen or king bed centered with the foot of the bed past the rug edge, or in a study, library, or formal entry. The light field reads brighter than a red Tabriz and works particularly well in rooms with darker furniture or warmer wood tones.
Origin and Construction
Hand-knotted in Tabriz in northwest Persia at the fine workshop tier, this rug is built on a cotton foundation with a wool and silk pile at 50 raj density, equivalent to roughly 400 knots per square inch. Raj is the traditional Tabriz unit of knot density (knots per 7cm of horizontal weave), and 50 raj sits in the upper tier of workshop production, one step below the 60 raj master workshop pieces. The cotton foundation provides excellent dimensional stability while the silk highlights woven into the wool pile add reflective contrast and allow the finer detail in the drawing to resolve cleanly. This piece is in excellent never-used condition with full original pile, intact silk fringes, and crisp selvages.
