9'8 x 12'1 Persian Tabriz Rug | Red Medallion | 160-180 KPSI Vintage Wool

This 9'8 x 12'1 vintage Persian Tabriz rug is a fully hand-knotted wool piece in the classical lachak-toranj (medallion-and-corner) layout. A multi-tiered navy and sky-blue medallion with a peach inner cartouche sits on a deep red field, framed by ivory corner spandrels packed with floral vases and palmettes. The main border carries paisley-style boteh cartouches in green, salmon, and ivory on red, supported by slim guard borders in navy and ivory. Knot density runs 160 to 180 KPSI on a cotton foundation, the standard build for a workshop-quality Tabriz of this scale. At nearly 117 square feet this is a true room-size rug, sized for a great room, large living or family room, formal dining room, or a primary bedroom.

A note on condition. This rug carries heavy abrash and visible patina from decades of use. Abrash is the natural color variation that happens when a weaver runs through different wool dye lots, and over time it deepens into the kind of soft, lived-in tonal shifts you see across this red field. We have documented every area of abrash and patina in the product video. Please watch the video all the way through to the end before purchasing, as it shows the full surface in detail. This piece is priced as a heavily discounted vintage offering precisely because of its character and condition, and the price reflects that. Our standard free returns to all 50 states apply if it is not what you expected.

Design and Motifs

The composition is a textbook classical Tabriz medallion design. A central toranj (medallion) carries a stepped, multi-lobed silhouette in navy with a sky-blue inner ring, a peach diamond cartouche at the very center, and densely packed floral rosettes filling every tier. Pendant cartouches drop from the top and bottom of the medallion into the open red field. The four corners carry generous ivory lachak (spandrels) drawn with bouquets, palmettes, and curling vinework, a hallmark of Tabriz workshop drawing. The main border is built around large boteh-style cartouches in green and salmon set on a red ground, alternating with smaller floral motifs, while a series of guard borders in navy, ivory, and green frame the whole composition with crisp graphic rhythm.

Colors and Placement

The palette is anchored by a saturated deep red field, lifted by navy and sky blue in the medallion and ivory in the corners. Accent colors include peach, salmon, pink, green and olive, yellow, and tan, all woven in fine drawing detail across the medallion and spandrels. The deep red base reads as warm and grounding, and the natural abrash creates softer pockets of color across the field that give the rug a hand-made, breathing quality machine-made rugs cannot replicate. At nearly 10 by 12 feet this works as a primary floor covering in a large living room or great room with a full furniture grouping on top, in a formal dining room under a 10-seat table with chairs fully on the rug, or in a large primary bedroom oriented under the bed and reaching past the nightstands.

Origin and Construction

Hand-knotted in Tabriz in northwest Persia, this rug is built on a cotton foundation with an all-wool pile at 160 to 180 knots per square inch. Tabriz weaving has the longest documented continuous history of any Persian rug center, with major workshop traditions reaching back to the Safavid period, and Tabriz studios are responsible for many of the canonical classical designs that have spread throughout Persian and Oriental rug production. Knot count in the 160 to 180 range places this piece in the medium-fine workshop tier, robust enough to handle high-traffic placement while still resolving the detailed medallion and border drawing cleanly.
