Wool Persian Rugs
Every great weaving tradition on earth chose wool, and Persian weavers had the best of it: fleece from highland sheep raised at altitudes where cold nights grow long, resilient fibers rich in lanolin. That natural oil is wool's quiet superpower. It sheds dirt and repels spills on its own, which is why a wool rug looks cleaner years in than any other floor covering, and the fiber's coiled structure springs back from footsteps that would crush lesser materials flat. Hand-spun and dyed in small batches, it also takes color unevenly in the most beautiful way, giving hand-knotted rugs the subtle tonal life no machine spinning reproduces. Every wool Persian rug on this page is one-of-a-kind and photographed exactly as it will arrive.
The wool traditions differ in personality. Persian Bijar rugs pack their wool so densely the trade calls them iron rugs, weavings that famously outlast the households that buy them. Kashan rugs work in kork, the soft first shearing from the lamb's shoulders, which knots finely enough for drawing that approaches silk. How the wool is anchored matters as much as the wool itself, and our guide to rug foundations explains what to look for. Wool earns its keep hardest in the lived-in sizes: a 6x9 Persian rug under daily family traffic, or a 10x14 Persian rug anchoring a great room for decades.
Where wool meets its refinements, our silk rugs show the luxury end of the fiber spectrum, and our wool and silk rugs put both in one weaving, silk tracing the highlights through a wool ground. If you are choosing a fiber for a specific room, that is a five-minute conversation with our rug experts on phone or chat, available any hour. Free shipping and free returns in all 50 states and Canada mean the oldest flooring material in the world can prove itself in your newest room.
