9'10 x 13'7 Persian Yazd Rug | Midnight Navy Field Floral Medallion | Wool 280-300 KPSI
This 9'10 x 13'7 Persian Yazd rug is a palace-size hand-knotted wool piece on a cotton foundation, woven at 280 to 300 knots per square inch. An elongated vertical floral medallion in peach, gold, sky blue, and olive sits centered on a deep midnight navy field, surrounded by scattered floral bouquets and paisley sprays. The standout feature is the inner main border: a rare scalloped cartouche design with large ivory and tan medallions enclosing branch-and-leaf motifs, framed by a navy main border of finely drawn floral palmettes and ivory and rust guard borders. At nearly 134 square feet this is a true palace-size rug, sized for a great room, formal living room with two seating groups, large formal dining room, ballroom-scale entry, or oversized primary suite.
Design and Motifs
The composition is anchored by a vertical elongated medallion built in tiered stepped lozenges with peach and gold floral palmettes filling the interior tiers, opening to a small sky blue and ivory diamond cartouche at the very center with finely drawn floral rosettes. Above and below the medallion, paired arabesque pendants drop into the field, terminating in delicate floral finials. The navy field is sparsely populated with scattered floral bouquets, paisley boteh sprays, and small leaf clusters in ivory, sky blue, peach, and rust, giving the eye room to rest between motifs. The inner main border is the most distinctive element of this rug: large ivory and tan scalloped cartouches drawn with tree-of-life branch motifs on sky blue ground, alternating in a continuous band that frames the field with unusual visual weight. The outer main border on navy carries finely drawn floral palmettes and curling vinework, framed by ivory and rust guard borders.
Colors and Placement
The palette centers on a saturated midnight navy field, the darkest and richest end of Persian blue dyeing, balanced by ivory, cream, and tan in the medallion and inner cartouche border. Warm accents include peach, salmon, gold, rust, and terracotta in the medallion drawing and floral field motifs, with sky blue, olive, brown, and small touches of green woven throughout. The deep navy field reads as elegant and formal, a classical evening-room palette that works beautifully against lighter walls and pale wood floors, or in deeply paneled rooms where it complements darker millwork. At nearly 10 by 14 feet this works as a primary floor covering in a large formal living room with a full furniture grouping plus secondary seating both on the rug, in a formal dining room under a 12 to 14 seat table with chairs fully on the rug, in an oversized primary bedroom oriented under the bed with significant overhang on three sides, or in a long formal entry or gallery hall.
Origin and Construction
Hand-knotted in Yazd in central Persia, this rug is built on a cotton foundation with an all-wool pile at 280 to 300 knots per square inch. Yazd is one of the historic weaving centers of central Iran, known for high-quality wool, distinctive design vocabulary drawn from both classical workshop traditions and the surrounding Yazd province, and a willingness to work across the design spectrum from geometric to fully curvilinear floral. This piece sits in the workshop tier with fine curvilinear floral drawing in the medallion and an unusually formal scalloped cartouche border that draws on Kashan and Kerman design conventions. The knot density in the 280 to 300 range supports the fine detail in the medallion and border drawing while keeping the rug robust enough for high-traffic placement. The piece is in excellent never-used condition with full original pile, intact ivory cotton fringes, and crisp selvages.
